How to get to Doolin?

If you travel to Ireland from overseas, you’ll most likely arrive by air. The nearest airport to Doolin is Shannon Airport, a small, modern, and accessible facility located less than 65 km (40 miles) away—just under an hour’s drive. However, Shannon’s limited size means it may not offer direct flights from your location. In that case, you might consider flying into Dublin International Airport, Ireland’s largest airport, situated approximately 269 km from Doolin.

Other airport options include Knock Airport (155 km), Kerry Airport (170 km), Cork Airport (194 km), and Belfast Airport (437 km). Your choice of airport will depend on your travel plans and the availability of direct flights from your home. Once in Ireland, you’ll find various transportation options, including private drivers, taxis, public transport, coaches, and rental cars. Further information can be found here.

Be an early bird and plan ahead

If you have specific dates or preferences for your trip, we highly recommend booking as early as possible. May, June, and September are especially popular, so securing your plans in advance is the best way to avoid disappointment.

When should I book my flights to Ireland?

For long-haul flights to Ireland, it’s wise to book as early as possible. More airlines now offer direct routes to Ireland than ever before, making it easier to find options that suit your needs.

  • Aer Lingus, Ireland’s flag carrier, provides direct flights from/to numerous North American cities.
  • Flight comparison can be invaluable for finding the best deals. Alternatively, consider using a travel agent for assistance.

Verify your Passport expiration date
Before travelling internationally, ensure your passport is valid. Ireland requires that your passport remains valid for the entirety of your stay. It’s always a good idea to double-check its expiration date before making travel arrangements.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

While travel insurance is a personal choice, it’s always a smart precaution. A good policy can provide coverage for medical expenses, lost baggage, flight delays, and cancellations, giving you added peace of mind during your trip.

Should I bring medication to Ireland?

If you have prescribed medication you need to bring it. Consult with your medical professional before your trip. Ensure you have sufficient medication to allow for delays or unexpected events. Always carry important medication in your hand luggage.

Information for US citizens from the US embassy in Ireland:

Carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.  Carry a list of your medical history and all medications you are taking (including dosage and brand name). Most over-the-counter (OTC) medications are available, but many U.S. brands are not.  Some U.S. OTC medications may require a prescription in Ireland. Irish pharmacists may not be able to dispense medication prescribed by U.S. physicians and may direct you to obtain a prescription from an Irish doctor.

More information on this topic from the US Embassy in Ireland can be found here.

Should I rent a car in Ireland?

Renting a car offers the flexibility to travel on your own schedule, but it’s important to be prepared for driving on the left side of the road and navigating Ireland’s often narrow roads. If you’re not accustomed to driving a manual car, be sure to select an automatic transmission when booking. However, if driving doesn’t feel like the right fit for you, there are plenty of alternative transportation options available (see link above).

Is Google Maps reliable for navigation in Ireland?
While Google Maps is a helpful tool, it’s wise to use it cautiously in Ireland. It can sometimes direct you to narrow, local, or gravel roads that aren’t ideal for travel. To avoid unnecessary challenges, consider cross-checking routes or using local advice to ensure smoother navigation.

What is the weather like in Ireland? What clothes should I pack when travelling to Ireland?

The phrase “four seasons in one day” is more than just a saying in Ireland; it’s a testament to the country’s famously unpredictable weather.

Throughout the year, Ireland experiences swift and dramatic shifts in weather conditions.

Sunny skies can suddenly give way to rain showers, followed by a gust of wind that ushers in a chill. This meteorological rollercoaster creates an ever-changing landscape, keeping locals and visitors alike on their toes.

While the summer months from July to August are likely the warmest and driest months, you may still experience the odd shower or gusty wind, especially on the Atlantic coast.

The Irish weather’s rapid transformations add an element of surprise to daily life (and holiday life), making it essential to be prepared for a bit of everything, no matter the season. Keep this in mind when packing.
